Saying goodbye to Dave

Dave, I’ve found it so hard to put down the things I really want to say, I never wanted to say them, I never thought I would have to. I could write things down and then start again, over and over again. There’s just so much I want to say and not enough time to say it. So this poem I’ve written will have to do, it’s all I have to offer. I’ve never written a poem before so if you were standing with me now you would probably say ‘fair play’.

I’m sorry for the loss we feel, we didn’t get to say goodbye

I’m sorry for the loss we feel, for Tracy, Sam and India

I’m sorry for the loss we feel, for our big sister Linda, she’s been a mum to you as well

I’m sorry for the loss we feel, for your nephews, nieces, cousins and more

I’m sorry for the loss we feel, for those you loved and who loved you back

I’m sorry for the loss we feel, for those you called friends and who you made smile

I’m sorry for the loss we feel, for those who were touched by your enormous smile

I’m sorry for the loss we feel, when we look back at times you just made us laugh

I’m sorry for the loss we feel, when we look for you and you just aren’t there

I’m sorry for the loss we feel, all gathered here today to say our last goodbyes

I can never be sorry for the pride I feel in the life we shared or the values we held

I can never be sorry about the many, many lives you touched and friends you made

I can never be sorry for the times we had, the laughs, the tears and hugs we shared

I can never be sorry for the 47 years you were here, I’ve loved you from the day you were born

I can never be sorry for the terrible loss I feel, you’re my brother, that can never change, the brother I had is the one I wanted.

So today we say goodbye for now, take care.

Thank you for the life we shared and for always being there.
